What is Schengen insurance?

Are you planning a trip to Europe? Whether you’re a tourist, visiting family, traveling for work, or on a business trip, compliant Schengen insurance is essential for obtaining your visa. Schengen insurance is travel insurance required under Article 15 of European Regulation (EC) No. 810/2009: anyone applying for a Type C Schengen visa, valid for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, must prove they have adequate travel medical coverage before submitting their application.

Your Schengen insurance must cover emergency medical expenses up to at least €30,000, emergency hospitalization costs, and medical repatriation—including repatriation of the body in the event of death—throughout the entire Schengen Area and for the entire duration of your stay.

Many applications are delayed or denied because the insurance does not meet consular requirements.Compliant Schengen insurance differs from a standard travel insurance policy in three key ways that consulates systematically verify: the maximum coverage for medical expenses must explicitly be at least €30,000; the geographic coverage must include all countries in the Schengen Area, not just the destination country; and the certificate must cover the entire duration of the stay.
At Geodesk, we offer Schengen insurance that meets the requirements of European consulates.

When does Schengen insurance make a difference?

Geodesk understands the realities of visa applications and the situation on the ground—a risk that is often underestimated.

The visa was denied because the insurance did not meet the requirements

You’ve booked your ticket and prepared your application… but the consulate has denied your visa request. The reason? An insurance certificate that doesn’t meet Schengen requirements: the certificate you submitted caps medical expenses at €30,000 and doesn’t include the required repatriation coverage. The traveler must recompile their application and reschedule an appointment, often just a few days before departure. Geodesk addresses this issue proactively: the certificate is verified against the relevant consulate’s list of required documents, then issued in the correct format, for the correct amount, and covering the correct length of stay.

A medical emergency that costs much more than expected

Medical repatriation: the safety net we hope we'll never have to use

However, when a serious accident or illness requires medical evacuation, everything must be arranged very quickly; the goal is to reach the appropriate medical facility and then arrange for medical repatriation to the home country if necessary. The repatriation coverage under Schengen insurance covers this transportation, medical escort, and, in the event of death, the repatriation of the remains. A 24-hour assistance hotline coordinates the entire process.

Geodesk tailors its Schengen insurance coverage to your needs

Whether you’re traveling for tourism, a family visit, studies, a business trip, or a short-term assignment abroad, the right Schengen insurance policy isn’t necessarily the cheapest one—it’s the one that fits your situation, meets Schengen visa requirements, and covers the actual duration of your stay.

Why Is a Schengen Insurance Certificate Denied?

A single detail can jeopardize your Schengen visa application. The most common mistakes are: medical coverage below the required €30,000 limit; insurance limited to the destination country only, rather than covering the entire Schengen Area; validity dates that do not exactly match the duration of your stay; and an insurance certificate obtained after the visa application has been submitted, which may be deemed inadmissible. This video explains how consular authorities actually verify a Schengen insurance certificate (coverage amount, policyholder’s name, coverage area, dates, and repatriation coverage), as well as the key points to check before submitting your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions about international health insurance. For more specific inquiries, please contact us: we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Schengen visa insurance is travel insurance required by Article 15 of Regulation (EC) No. 810/2009 for all applicants for a short-stay visa. Schengen visa insurance is mandatory for obtaining an entry visa, because the Schengen Area wants to ensure that travelers can cover any medical expenses, emergency hospitalization, or repatriation without relying on local healthcare systems.

To be accepted by consular authorities, your insurance must, among other things: cover at least €30,000 in medical expenses; include emergency hospitalization costs; cover medical repatriation and the repatriation of remains in the event of death; be valid in all Schengen Area countries; cover the entire duration of your stay; and provide a valid, personalized certificate.
At Geodesk, we verify that your policy meets all requirements before it is issued. Request your personalized quote: it’s free, fast, and non-binding.

Beyond the regulatory threshold, compare the actual medical expense limit with the cost of care in the countries you’ll be visiting, the availability of direct reimbursement that eliminates the need to pay upfront, the quality and availability of assistance, and the options that are relevant to your situation: liability coverage, baggage coverage, and trip cancellation coverage. A vacation, a family visit, a study trip, or a business trip each requires a different plan, as every trip is unique.

After a quick review of your profile, visa, and length of stay, Geodesk will provide you with a quote and then issue your personalized, certified certificate. The policy can be purchased by the traveler themselves or by a third party, such as a family or organization hosting them in France.

The cost of Schengen insurance depends mainly on the length of stay, the insured person’s age, and the selected options (higher coverage limits, liability coverage, baggage coverage, trip cancellation coverage). A surcharge generally applies for those aged 65 and older. The best way to get an exact, customized quote is to request one. (Pricing table coming soon)

Contact the assistance platform, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, before incurring any expenses whenever possible: it will coordinate your referral to an appropriate facility, arrange for medical care, and, if your medical condition requires it, arrange for your repatriation. Keep all medical documentation and invoices for the processing of your claim.

Yes. A valid Schengen Visa insurance policy covers you in all Schengen Area member countries, even if your itinerary includes multiple destinations. This allows you to travel with peace of mind without having to purchase a separate insurance policy for each country you visit.

Some insurance companies offer a refund of all or part of the premium in the event of a visa denial, upon presentation of official proof. The terms and conditions vary by policy. Geodesk advisors will explain the available options and their terms when you purchase your policy.

If you are applying for a long-stay visa (D visa), standard Schengen insurance is generally no longer sufficient. For long-stay visas, each country sets its own requirements.
France requires more comprehensive medical and repatriation coverage for the entire duration of the stay: international health insurance; expat insurance; coverage for international students; and professional mobility insurance.

Yes. Depending on the available plans, it is possible to insure multiple members of the same family under a single policy. This solution simplifies the administrative process while providing tailored coverage for each traveler. Our dedicated Schengen Insurance advisors will help you choose the most advantageous plan.
