Are you applying for a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) to spend several months or a year living abroad? Whether your destination is Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Argentina, or another partner country, international health insurance is often required to obtain your visa. At Geodesk, we support young travelers, students, interns, and temporary expats with insurance solutions specifically designed for long-term stays abroad.
The PVT (Work and Travel Program) insurance, known as Working Holiday, supports you on a unique adventure: spending several months abroad to travel, work, study, or gain international experience.
It protects you for the entire duration of your stay, whether it lasts 6, 12, or up to 24 months, depending on your visa. You’ll benefit from essential coverage, including: coverage of medical and hospitalization expenses abroad, 24/7 medical assistance and repatriation, liability coverage for damages caused to third parties, assistance in case of emergencies, accidents, or illness, and coverage that meets the requirements of the major Working Holiday visas.
Standard travel insurance ends where the Working Holiday Visa (WHV) begins: “tourism” coverage is designed for just a few weeks, and insurance provided through credit cards usually stops covering you after 60 to 90 days, with numerous exclusions. A WHV insurance policy, on the other hand, covers the entire duration of your stay.
Many travelers are also unaware that when they leave France for a country outside the European Union, they no longer benefit from the usual protection provided by the French Social Security system. In Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, or South Korea, a simple doctor’s visit, an X-ray, or a few days in the hospital can cost thousands of euros—all of which you’ll have to pay out of pocket.
With Geodesk, our experts work with you to ensure that your policy meets the requirements of the Working Holiday Visa, your destination, and your plans. We help you choose the coverage that’s truly tailored to your situation to avoid any unpleasant surprises once you arrive.
A risk that is often underestimated. Geodesk understands the reality on the ground. At Geodesk, we assist travelers, international students, young people on Working Holiday Visas, and humanitarian organizations all over the world every year. We know that these risks aren’t just theoretical—they happen every day.
A French Working Holiday Visa holder travels to Australia, where France has no reciprocal agreement with Medicare: the holder is responsible for 100% of all healthcare costs. While working a seasonal job, the holder develops acute appendicitis, requiring surgery and several days of hospitalization. The bill can reach tens of thousands of Australian dollars. In Australia, holders of a French Working Holiday Visa do not automatically receive full coverage for medical care. Medical expenses, hospitalization, tests, and surgery can amount to tens of thousands of Australian dollars. With Geodesk international insurance: medical expenses are covered according to the selected coverage options, hospitalization is covered, 24/7 medical assistance is provided, and advance payment of expenses is available when necessary.
When a case of suspected typhoid fever arose in Nepal, Geodesk’s assistance team responded in less than an hour because one of the representatives was already familiar with the case. For a Working Holiday visa holder who is far from home, several time zones away from their family, it’s not just about getting medical expenses reimbursed. It’s about being able to immediately reach an assistance team capable of referring you to a trusted medical facility; organizing your medical care; coordinating communication with doctors; monitoring your case until you’ve recovered; and arranging medical repatriation if your condition requires it.
Personal liability coverage while traveling abroad is the most overlooked coverage under the Working Holiday Program—and one of the most useful. A bicycle accident that injures a passerby, water damage in a shared living space, or damage to a valuable item at a host’s home: in these situations, you are liable for the damage caused to others and must compensate them. The personal liability coverage abroad included in your international insurance policy covers the financial consequences of such damage, subject to the terms of the policy.
Whether you’re traveling on a Working Holiday Visa (WHV), for an internship, to study, on a humanitarian mission, as a volunteer, or for an extended stay abroad, basic travel insurance is often not enough. At Geodesk, we design international coverage tailored to your destination, the requirements of your WHV, and the actual risks of your trip.
Your Geodesk PVT international insurance covers, among other things: medical consultations; prescription medications; tests and lab work; medical emergencies; hospitalization; and surgical procedures during your stay, with coverage limits based on the actual cost of care in the destination country—a critical factor in a country where hospitalization can cost tens of thousands of euros.
Repatriation is a critical—and often costly—coverage. Geodesk’s PVT international insurance policy tailors this coverage to your needs, organizing and covering medical transport to France or an appropriate healthcare facility, as well as the repatriation of remains in the event of death, with an assistance platform available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Civil liability coverage protects you against unintentional harm caused to others in your personal life while abroad—including bodily injury, property damage, or emotional distress caused to third parties—and provides compensation for such damages in accordance with the terms of the policy.
A number you can call at any time, regardless of the time difference, with representatives who are familiar with your case: the assistance team coordinates the search for a doctor, arranges for medical care, and, if necessary, organizes your repatriation.
In the event of a serious accident resulting in permanent disability or death, the policy provides for the payment of a lump-sum benefit to the beneficiaries named in the PVT international insurance policy.
Geodesk issues an insurance certificate that meets the requirements of the relevant visa, which is issued quickly and can be presented at the border or when applying for a visa—a document that sometimes determines whether entry into the country is granted or the duration of the permit.
For 30 years, Geodesk has focused on a single line of business: providing insurance for individuals and organizations worldwide, in more than 150 countries, including high-risk areas. This focus gives the team in-depth knowledge of the specific requirements of each destination country and the pitfalls that can prove costly for travelers who receive poor advice.
At Geodesk, a dedicated representative manages your case from the initial contact through to any potential claim. You receive personalized and responsive support before your departure and throughout your time abroad. It is this responsiveness and the human touch behind the policy that our policyholders appreciate most.
Your international project is unique. Your international insurance policy should be, too. Geodesk does not sell pre-packaged policies: each policy is negotiated and tailored to your specific situation—destination country, purpose of the assignment, length of stay, planned activities, and budget. This customization is crucial for Working Holiday visas for countries such as Canada or the U.S.
Geodesk conducts a free audit of your current coverage and identifies your risk areas in less than 48 hours—with no obligation and 100% confidentially. The audit verifies that your international project is truly protected, coverage by coverage.

Many future travelers believe they’re covered by their credit card or by the French Social Security system: this is the most common mistake people make before embarking on a Working Holiday Visa (WHV). Credit card insurance has coverage limits, is restricted to 60 or 90 days, and is riddled with exclusions, while the French Social Security system stops reimbursing medical expenses as soon as you leave France for a country outside the European Union.

Coverage tailored to your visa, your destination, and the actual length of your stay
A business trip lasting just a few days does not eliminate the risk: it is often the situation for which people are least prepared and most vulnerable. An employee traveling for a 48-hour meeting may have an accident, fall ill, or find themselves stranded due to an unforeseen local event, without knowing who to call or how their expenses will be covered.
Geodesk’s international business travel insurance covers your business travelers for the specific duration of each trip: medical expenses, 24-hour assistance, and direct payment for emergency medical care to avoid out-of-pocket expenses. Each policy takes into account not only the destination country but also transit countries, which are too often overlooked by standard coverage.
Beyond medical assistance, Geodesk supports your employees in managing any unforeseen events that may arise during business travel. Whether it’s an interruption of a business trip, a security incident, an early return for family reasons, an evacuation, or any other critical event, our teams coordinate every step of the response promptly—from the initial report through to the complete resolution of the situation. This allows you to ensure the safety of your business travel, minimize the operational impact of incidents, and fulfill your duty of care toward your employees.
An expatriate does not leave for just a few weeks: he or she settles, sometimes with his or her family, in a country where he or she is unfamiliar with either the healthcare system or the legal framework. As soon as he or she leaves the French general social security system, his or her original social security coverage no longer applies, and the employer becomes liable in the event of a breach.
Geodesk’s expatriate insurance provides comprehensive and long-term coverage: health, accident, professional and personal liability while abroad, with coverage extended to the spouse and children. Each expatriate insurance policy is tailored to the host country, the employee’s actual status, and applicable local requirements.
Geodesk also handles the gray areas that standard contracts overlook: changes in employment status during an assignment, transition periods between two assignments, and temporary returns to France. These gaps, which are often not covered elsewhere, expose both the employee and the company to risk.
The cost of hospitalization abroad is unpredictable and can reach amounts far exceeding what a French health insurance plan reimburses. In the United States, just a few days in intensive care are enough to far exceed the coverage limits of a standard policy. For example, here are the average costs of a major hospitalization (3 to 5 days with surgery, depending on the condition):
The coverage limits recommended by Geodesk start at 1 million outside the U.S. and Canada, and at 5 million euros or unlimited, depending on the region
Geodesk’s international health insurance guarantees access to care in the country of assignment without any upfront costs, with coverage limits based on the actual cost of local care—not on a flat-rate schedule. Our team carefully reviews the specific coverage limits for intensive care and resuscitation, as well as deductibles and waiting periods—areas where unpleasant surprises often lurk.
This coverage extends to the employee's family when the assignment requires it, and is aligned with the local insurance requirements specific to each country. The goal is to ensure that no employee forgoes medical care and that no company finds itself facing an insufficient coverage limit when a claim arises.
Given the rising cost of healthcare—particularly in the United States, Canada, Singapore, and Switzerland—a coverage limit that is too low may leave the company responsible for a significant portion of medical expenses. Geodesk believes that HR directors and mobility managers must ensure this financial risk is fully covered.
International mobility exposes companies and their employees to major risks: death, disability, inability to work, or loss of independence.
The human, legal, and financial consequences can be significantly amplified, particularly outside the European Union.
Insurance policies designed for France often provide only partial coverage for situations encountered abroad, leaving the company and employees’ families exposed to significant risks.
With Geodesk’s international insurance solution, your employees benefit from comprehensive and consistent coverage in all their countries of assignment. Coverage is tailored to the employee’s status and country of assignment: death benefits, annuities, disability and incapacity benefits adapted to the employee’s status and assignment location, long-term disability coverage, and protection tailored to expatriates, seconded employees, and employees on international assignments.
Each type of coverage is integrated with international health and social security coverage to ensure seamless protection across all arrangements.
Because international career paths evolve rapidly, Geodesk pays special attention to changes in status, which are common in international mobility: an employee on a temporary assignment who becomes an expatriate, or a volunteer who becomes an employee; long-term assignments; local hiring; or changes in contract terms.
Each transition is managed to ensure continuity of coverage.
When an employee faces a medical emergency abroad, every minute counts.
The first reaction is often uncertainty: who to call, in what language, and who makes the decisions. The true quality of international travel insurance is measured at that very moment, not in the policy terms and conditions. Companies need international travel insurance that can provide an immediate, coordinated, and multilingual response.
With Geodesk and its assistance and insurance partners, international assistance services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Medical teams and emergency coordinators provide support to employees worldwide, taking into account time zones, local constraints, and language barriers. The goal is simple: to ensure rapid care while relieving the company of crisis management responsibilities.
Our responsiveness is proven: during a typhoid case in Nepal, our team responded in less than an hour to organize care for the employee—demonstrating our ability to act quickly even in areas with highly complex logistics.
Medical repatriation is a critical benefit; coverage levels, conditions of coverage, and exclusions can vary significantly from one policy to another. We systematically verify and analyze essential coverage provisions, including medical repatriation to the country of residence or an appropriate medical facility, repatriation of remains in the event of death, early return due to a serious family event, the terms of coverage, and any contractual limitations.
This analysis enables companies to avoid risk areas that are often discovered... by the time it is already too late, and to protect your employees, minimize operational disruptions, and fulfill your duty of care toward your employees.
An accident during an overseas assignment involves more than just covering medical expenses. It can have significant financial consequences for the employee, their family, and the company. Many companies assume that a work-related accident occurring abroad will be handled the same way as in France, which is rarely the case outside the European Union.
Geodesk’s individual accident coverage supplements health insurance by providing lump-sum benefits in the event of bodily injury, permanent disability, or death, regardless of medical reimbursement. This coverage protects the employee and their loved ones and limits the employer’s liability exposure.
We tailor this coverage to each employee’s profile, based on the risks associated with the country, the line of work, and the duration of the assignment: a consultant on a one-time business trip, an employee at an industrial site, and a staff member sent to a high-risk area do not face the same risks or have the same compensation needs.
Here you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions about international health insurance. For more specific inquiries, please contact us: we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
In many countries, yes.
Depending on your destination and your status (Working Holiday Visa, international student, NGO volunteer, expatriate, or long-term traveler). Working Holiday insurance is a legal requirement and a condition for entry into the country, for example in Canada and New Zealand. It is also required when applying for a Working Holiday visa for several countries, such as Chile, Argentina, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea. In Australia and Japan, insurance isn’t always required to obtain a visa, but it’s still strongly recommended—and for French citizens, it’s practically impossible to avoid. In any case, the French government requires international health coverage for those participating in a Working Holiday program.
In Canada, under the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, health, hospitalization, and repatriation insurance is mandatory for the entire duration of your stay. This is one of the most common mistakes: the border services officer issues a work permit whose duration is based on the term of your insurance policy. If you present a 12-month international insurance policy while your Working Holiday Visa (WHV) allows for 24 months, your permit will be limited to 12 months with no possibility of extending it afterward. To obtain the maximum duration of the Canada WHV, you must therefore purchase international insurance covering the full 24 months. Geodesk automatically aligns the duration of the Working Holiday insurance policy with the total desired length of stay to avoid this pitfall.
In practical terms, this means that you are responsible for paying your own medical expenses. Australia restricts access to its public health care system, Medicare, to nationals of about ten countries that have signed a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement: the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and a few others. France is not among them. A French Working Holiday Visa holder must therefore pay for all healthcare costs in Australia, where a doctor’s visit costs about 100 Australian dollars, an ambulance ride can cost up to 2,000 dollars, and surgery requiring hospitalization can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Certain visa categories also require you to maintain health insurance for the entire duration of your stay.
Each destination has its own regulations. The requirements vary between: Canada; New Zealand; Japan; South Korea; Taiwan; Hong Kong; Chile; Argentina; Brazil; Mexico; Colombia; and Uruguay. Some destinations require a certificate when applying for a visa. Others conduct the verification directly upon your arrival.
The requirements vary by country, so it’s best to arrange this as soon as possible. Depending on your destination country, proof of insurance may be required when you apply for a visa; when you cross the border; or before your departure by your host organization. At Geodesk, we always recommend purchasing coverage in advance, before your Working Holiday trip, so that you’re covered from day one. We’ll send you your certificate within 48 business hours, so it’s available quickly to help you complete the necessary paperwork for countries that require proof of international Working Holiday insurance.
“Globe PVT” is one of the leading policies in the work-vacation insurance market and is widely discussed within the PVT community. As a specialist broker, Geodesk analyzes the PVT policies available on the market, reviews their coverage, limits, and exclusions, and guides you toward the solution best suited to your globetrotting plans, or designs a customized international insurance policy tailored to your profile.
The cost of a PVT insurance policy depends mainly on the total length of your stay, your age, the coverage options you choose, and your destination country. As a general guide, annual coverage typically ranges from 350 to 600 euros for a full year.
The key factor to consider is not the monthly cost alone, but the balance between your budget, the scope of coverage, and the actual cost of medical care in your destination country.
Many travelers take trips from their Working Holiday country—for example, from Australia to New Zealand or Asia, from Canada to the U.S., or from Singapore to Thailand. Not all insurance policies cover these trips outside the main destination country. Geodesk verifies the actual geographic scope of your policy, including transit countries and stays outside your primary destination, to prevent any gaps in coverage during your travels.
